Wins for A Team & U17 Boys; U15 Girls show spirit despite defeat

Men’s Div 1: Cois Fharraige 4-5 Colemanstown. Our A team made the long early Sunday morning spin to Carraroe. Both sides started brightly with possession shared evenly in the opening exchanges. The hosts struck first on 12 mins, but Colemanstown responded just 8mins later. A booming kick from Junior Finn in goals found the powerful run of Ciaran Mulhern, who burst in behind the defence & coolly finished to level the game at 1–1. From there it was tit-for-tat, but Cois Farraige managed to nick two rather fortunate goals before the interval to give them a 3–1 lead at half-time.

Managerial changes saw Thady Moran introduced for the 2nd half, but it was the hosts again who landed the first blow as they scored within a minute of the restart to stretch their lead to 4–1. If Colemanstown were rattled, they didn’t show it. Instead, they settled back into their rhythm and began to dominate possession. On 55mins, veteran Sean Hardiman rose highest at the back post to nod home after a recycled corner ball to cut the deficit to 4–2. The momentum built. Aironas Kantauskas struck on the hour mark to make it 4–3 & 10 mins later Mulhern popped up again to level matters at 4–4. With 12mins to go, Colemanstown’s never-say-die spirit paid off in spectacular fashion. Some slick link-up play down the left between Mossy Carr and young Matthew Keane ended with a clever flick by Mulhern, who finished superbly past the keeper to complete his hat-trick & seal an incredible 5–4 comeback. What looked like a hopeless situation after the first minute of the 2nd half turned into one of the most dramatic turnarounds imaginable, certainly proof that this team doesn’t know the meaning of “dead & buried.”  Match Report: Martina Donnellan

U17 Boys Div1: Athenry 1-3 Colemanstown. Colemanstown United U17 Boys continued their strong start to the Division 1 campaign with a well-earned 3–1 win away to Athenry, showcasing grit, composure, and attacking flair in a competitive and entertaining encounter. The visitors started brightly, pressing high and controlling possession in the early stages. Joshua Lualdi and Martin Mellody both went close with efforts from distance, while Colemanstown created several promising chances through clever build-up play.  Athenry, to their credit, showed confidence playing out from the back and created a few chances of their own. The breakthrough came late in the first half when Martin Mellody opened the scoring with a superb long-range strike following a well-worked move down the left flank, giving Colemanstown a deserved 1–0 lead at the break. Defensively, Colemanstown were solid throughout, with Tommy Nutley, Morgan Keogh, and Oisín Gavin marshalling the back line, supported by James Somers and Fionn Proulx on the left.

The second half began with both teams showing renewed energy. Colemanstown continued to threaten through Martin Mellody, Harry Tierney hitting the post, and Joshua Lualdi but it was Athenry who struck first, equalising ten minutes in with a well-taken finish from their striker — a moment that could have shifted the momentum. However, Colemanstown responded immediately. From the restart, Martin Mellody restored the lead with a brilliant strike from 25 meters, his second of the game, putting the visitors back in control. Fresh legs were introduced to maintain intensity and shore up the midfield and defence: Ryan Shaughnessy replaced Joshua, Daniel Booth came on for Noah McDonnell, Tadhg Harte for Tom Holahan, Gearóid Walsh for Martin Mellody and Mike Lally for Sean Keating — all making valuable contributions. On the 20th minute of the second half, a slick move involving Jamie Lally set up Harry Tierney, who had come on for the returning Paddy Gavin, to seal the win with a tidy finish after a swift counterattack to make  it 3–1. With 15 minutes remaining, Paddy Gavin and Fionn Proulx were reintroduced to reinforce the midfield and defence. Unfortunately, Fabian Carroll had to withdraw due to injury. This result marks another step forward for Colemanstown’s boys, who continue to build momentum in the league. With solid performances across the pitch and a growing sense of confidence, the squad looks well-positioned for a strong season ahead. Special thanks to Seamus Somers for returning to the dugout — we knew you couldn’t stay away for long!  Match Report: Luca Lualdi

U15 Girls Div 1: Oughterard 3 – 0 Colemanstown. Our U15 girls made the long spin out to Oughterard on Sunday morning & despite the best efforts of Niall Rohan’s charges, they came away on the wrong side of a 3–0 scoreline. While Oughterard proved to be the stronger side on the day, the final result doesn’t truly reflect the effort & quality shown by our girls. Colemanstown battled well in stages & worked hard to create openings, but just lacked that clinical edge in front of goal to make their pressure count. That said, there were plenty of positives to take, though, as this young side continues to grow in confidence & experience with every game. The performance was far better than the scoreline suggests. It was a spirited display that deserved more reward.  Match report: Martina Donnellan
