U14’s league encounter v Athenry

Our u14’s got one over on Athenry earlier on Saturday morning as they brushed away Athenry’s challenge with ultimate ease and in doing so clocked their 3rd consecutive win, this time with a 5-2 margin. Where our ‘A’ team lacked that cutting edge in front of goal, David Gilligan’s charges showed plenty of it through Shane Loughrey & Alan Naughton with the latter also hitting the crossbar. Colemanstown dominated the 1st half from the outset but failed to put away all their chances as the pattern of the game was set. Thady Moran was quickest off the mark within 5mins with a well taken goal, his 2nd of the league campaign. Mika Harun scored No.2 seven mins later as Thady Moran swung in a corner but Athenry’s attempted clearance deflected off the leg of Mika. At this stage there was wave after wave of Colemanstown attacks but yet the Athenry custodian was in good form between the posts while Colemanstown custodian Jack Bellew was also called upon to make a few vital saves. Our 3rd goal came from the boot of Shane Loughrey not long before the break as he won the ball outside the box & chipped the keeper from distance as he did well to spot him off his line. The pace of the game upped even more before the break when Alan Naughton scored from a Thady Moran corner which was beautifully floated in & Naughton was perfectly positioned on the back post to volley home with his left foot. 4-0 half time. A reshuffled Colemanstown team for the 2nd half saw Josh Brennan relocate to goals while Robert Cosgrove was introduced for Ian Geraghty who later gave way for the re-introduction of Alan Naughton. Athenry came right back into the game with 2 goals by the mid way period of the 2nd half. The re-introduction of Naughton made sure of the points with his second goal to kill off the game late on. A speedy recovery to Ethan Lally who was unable to play due to an arm injury sustained at home the day before. It was also great to see big Adam Wynne back to anchor midfield as he was up to his usual trickery together with Shane Loughrey as the two worked great as a central midfield duo.
