Colemanstown 7–1 Merlin Woods Our U16 boys got their new Div 2 league campaign off to a flying start on August 30th with a convincing 7–1 victory over Merlin Woods. With both sides fielding with just the bare 11 players, the game quickly became one-sided. Debutant Mark Finnerty & Finian Walsh both struck twice, while Thomas Kennedy, Mikey Nutley & Darragh Finnerty added a goal apiece to complete an excellent opening day performance.
Athenry 4–5 Colemanstown The lads made it two wins from two on Sept 2nd with a dramatic 5–4 win away to neighbours Athenry in difficult weather conditions. Colemanstown raced into a 3–1 lead, with a brace from Dermot Parker & David Barrett also found the net. Athenry fought back strongly to lead 4–3 with just 10 mins remaining, but Parker completed his hat-trick with two late goals to secure a thrilling win & maintain the perfect start.
Maree/Oranmore 0–5 Colemanstown Game three saw Colemanstown travel to Maree/Oranmore today & came away with another impressive victory & a clean sheet. After a goalless but hard fought 1st half; Thomas Kennedy & Mark Finnerty both went close. It was the Colemanstown lads who took control after the break. Finian Walsh scored two superb long range efforts, while Mark Finnerty added a close range finish. Conor Saunders then produced a spectacular effort from near halfway before debutant Max Raftery rounded off the scoring. The back five also deserve great credit for a strong defensive display while they also contributed to the attack throughout.
So that’s 3 games played, 3 wins, 17 goals scored & 5 conceded – a fantastic opening to the U16 Div. 2 campaign for the Colemanstown U16 boys. Match reports: Alan Walsh
