Boys U18 Div1: Galway Bohs 0-5 Colemanstown. What a way to open the league campaign! Under new manager Steven Broderick, our Under 18 boys travelled to Galway Bohs on Sunday for their opening Div. 1 league encounter & produced a magnificent display of tackling, passing, movement & superb teamwork to come away with an emphatic 5-0 opening league win. From the off, Colemanstown looked sharp, organised & hungry & it didn’t take long for the scoreboard to reflect their dominance.
On 10mins, Jamie Lally opened the scoring in spectacular fashion when he picked up the ball outside the box & unleashed an absolute screamer into the top corner, giving the Galway Bohs keeper no chance. A stunning way to get the campaign underway! Colemanstown doubled their advantage soon after, when Martin Mellody produced a goal every bit as good as the first. Mellody showed great composure to control the ball with his right boot before cutting onto his left & fired an unstoppable drive into the top corner. 2–0 Colemanstown!
The goals kept coming & debutant Philip Fitzgerald marked his first appearance for Colemanstown with a moment to remember as he stepped up from outside the box & unleashed another superb strike that flew into the net. 3 goals, 3 crackers! While Colemanstown dictated the tempo & controlled proceedings, there was still time for Tadhg Hart to get his name on the scoresheet before the break. The boys were relentless & a thoroughly deserved 4-0 lead greeted half-time.
The second half saw Colemanstown take their foot off the gas slightly which allowed the hosts to enjoy some good spells & come more into the game. However, the defensive unit remained excellent & the lads never looked in serious danger of surrendering their commanding advantage. With just 15 minutes remaining, Tom Holohan put the result beyond any doubt, finishing off a superb team performance with Colemanstown’s 5th goal of the afternoon.
Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the afternoon was seeing 5 different players get their names on the scoresheet which is a fantastic reflection of the attacking threat & unselfish teamwork throughout the team. 5 goals, a clean sheet & 3 points. U14 Boys: Div 2: Renmore 8- 1 Colemanstown U14B Renmore. Coming off a tough opening day defeat to Ballinasloe B, the Colemanstown U14B squad faced a quick turnaround with a challenging away trip to Renmore yesterday evening. With only two days to dwell on our weekend lessons, the lads rolled up their sleeves to bounce back in their second match of the new campaign. Lining up in a 4-4-2 formation, Kerrill Walsh started again in goal with a back four of Martin Flemming, Aaron Burke, Igor Ziolek, and Jamie Lally. The midfield featured James Vignoles, George Moore, captain Matthew Kelly, and a debut for Abiel Sudeep, while Lucas McKenna and Andrew Davoren started up front. Open exchanges were cagey before Renmore took the lead after 6 minutes, racing through the middle of midfield and defense to make it 1-0. Things went from bad to worse just 2 minutes later when a Renmore forward found space to double the lead, signaling another tough day ahead. Renmore extended their advantage to 3 goals after only 18 minutes of the first half. Despite the early deficit, the boys didn’t throw in the towel. They won a corner on the 28th minute, which broke to George Moore, whose shot was saved. Disaster struck just before half-time when Renmore’s forwards were given too much space again, adding a fourth goal to make it 0-4 at the break. Nathan Cleary replaced Andrew Davoren at half-time.
The half-time team talk initially seemed to work when Matthew Kelly played a through ball releasing Abiel Sudeep down the left. Abiel threaded it to Lucas McKenna, whose resulting shot was saved. Avey Mahon then came on for Abiel Sudeep, who had run his heart out, but the change didn’t spark the hoped-for comeback. Renmore proved ruthless, adding two more goals midway through the second half. In fairness to our boys, they continued to battle and tried to get into the game. Lucas McKenna put in a tireless shift up front chasing every ball, Kerrill Walsh pulled off some amazing saves to keep the scoreline down, Martin Flemming put in vital tackles, and Jamie Lally performed well in an unfamiliar position. Later in the half, Finn Scarry and Diarmuid Nevin came on to give James Vignoles and Lucas McKenna well-earned rests. Our “never say die” attitude eventually paid dividends when we won a penalty late in the game, which Matthew Kelly tucked away excellently. The match finished 8-1- a tough day with hard lessons to learn, but the squad showed great character to fight until the final whistle. Match report: Dermot Moore.
