Tough Baptism for B Team in League Opener

Our B team got their league campaign off with a tough start against a youthful Gort side played on Kiltulla’s new astro tonight. Many of our B Team players made their adult debuts tonight and blended nicely with the experienced old timers David Mullins, Steven Broderick & Kerrill Lally. Gort went at it hammer & tongs with Steven Broderick busy in goals from the start. David Mullins had a good early chance after good work from young Conor Booth to win the ball back, find Rob Cosgrove who found Mullins with time to shoot but his effort was drilled well wide of the left post.

Gort made the breakthrough on 12mins when Kerrill Lally & their pacey striker with much younger legs ran onto a long 50/50 ball over the top with the striker winning the race to slot calmly under Steven Broderick’s body.

Goal 2 arrived for Gort when the ball was whipped in from the end line and met the sliding boot of the Gort striker who poked it over the line. Gort’s No. 6 who had a fine game had a whopping drive from distance which dipped over Steven Broderick’s head. Gort got 2 more before half time which Steven could do little about. Broderick made a super 1 on 1 save with the keeper to put some impetus back in Colemanstown’s steps. Debutant Dean Reilly had a good chance but scudded over the crossbar. Colemanstown’s first real chance fell before the break following a good passage of play from Gearóid Fahy down the right flank, Conor Moran whipped in the cross but the keeper was quick off the mark to beat Dean Reilly to it. 5-0 at the break.

David Mullins had a good effort from a free kick soon after the restart which wasn’t too far off target. Dean Reilly clawed one back 9mins after the restart after a cross from Mullins was held up nicely by Conor Moran and Reilly was on hand to drill a low hard effort past the keeper. From there to the end belonged totally to Gort as they added a few more to end emphatic winners.  Dean Reilly had another chance from distance but drew a good save from Gort’s custodian. The game petered out with Gort well in charge as these lads will want to forget this league opener against a side which should surely be playing at a much higher level than Div3.

Squad: Steven Broderick, Kerrill Lally, Mark Donnellan, Stephen Lyons, Shane Lally, Conor Booth, David Mullins, Robert Cosgrove, Dean Reilly, Gearóid Fahy, Niall Skehill, Conor Moran, Anthony Keane. Speedy recovery to Gearóid Fahy who had to depart early through injury.
