Lohan’s goal settles U15 top of the table clash

Our U15s had a tight battle against table toppers Corrib Celtic in the league yesterday evening with the game deemed ‘vitally important’ with high bids by both sides to deliver silverware. The game ended in a 1-0 victory for the boys in green, an important result as we enter the business end of the league. Colemanstown created most of the first half chances although both teams were more equally matched in the 2nd half. It took a single effort from distance from Tiarnan Lohan early in the 2nd half to settle this one & claim victory on the day. Shane Duffy had the first crack at goal which required a double save by the Annaghdown side’s keeper; Tiarnan Lohan was off target and Duffy met a Lohan cross which was saved all before Corrib Celtic’s first real attempt at goal which came on 26mins as the Corrib Celtic striker connected well to a corner but Fionn Flattery was equal to the task.  Up until then, David Walsh, Diarmuid Ryan, Cillian Roche & Josh Buckley were like a green wall at the back. Corrib Celtic had a great chance then following a jittery moment in the Colemanstown rearguard. A corner swung in was missed by 3 lads who stole in at the back post which meant it was stalemate at half time. 0-0.

Colemanstown had work to do in the second half to turn the game around and capitalise on their chances. The first clear chance came 2mins after the restart for Tiarnan Lohan as the ball was played up the wing by Josh Buckley, to Jonah Donnellan who sprayed a glorious ball across to Lohan who connected beautifully to fire past the keeper from 20yards into the far corner. David Walsh had a further chance after good work from Shane Duffy and Kyle Madden. Cillian Roche wasn’t too far off target with a free after a foul on Ross Lally while Tiarnan Lohan fired unhandsomely over the crossbar following good work from Cathal Kennedy to hold up the ball. Colemanstown received a let-off midway through the half as their striker ran onto a great through ball and although the Colemanstown contingent were shouting for offside, the ref allowed play to continue and fortunately the striker found the wrong side of the post. In the last 10mins Corrib Celtic threw everything into the game as they pushed for the equaliser. Colemanstown soaked up the pressure like sponges, creating an odd chance of their own as Corrib Celtic continued to knock on the door. A corner whipped in by David Walsh was met by the head of Cillian Roche who headed wide & Diarmuid Ryan also saw his header go wide. At the death a timely interception by Cillian Roche at the back was vital as their female player Michaela, who had a great game following her introduction, was about to shoot. 1-0 it finished and a result that keeps our league hopes well alive for another while.
