Ladies lose to Kilkerrin in dogfight

Colemanstown 1 – 3 Kilkerrin Utd. RDFL Pre-Season Tournament
The score did not reflect this midweek ladies match as Colemanstown were as tough as nails but just failed to take control of the ball in the danger areas. Yet again the midfield partnership was very strong with Rachel O’Brien and Lucy Kenny making darting runs at the Kilkerrin defence and Sarah Kearney geting the best out of the Kilkerrin goalkeeper after just 5 mins. It was a tough and serious battle all over the pitch with Colemanstown making it hard for the opposition with close marking as instructed by Philip Dee & Pat Delaney but then Kilkerrin ladies created an attack on the left side and their No. 10 had a shot out of nothing that lobbed Ashley Roberts in the Colemanstown goal to give them a 1-0 cushion. The goal gave the Kilkerrin ladies great confidence and they attacked more and it was like the Colemanstown ladies dropped their heads and lost confidence in themselves. 5mins later from a corner on the right the ball was curled into the box and over the head of Ashley Roberts in goal straight from the corner as our ladies found the going going tough after that as they seemed to lose their way a little and hoping for half time for a chance to gather d recompose. Just before the break, Kilkerrin ladies launched another attack and again their striker found the bottom corner of the Colemanstown net to make it 3-0 on the stroke of half time.

Following a serious half time team talk, Colemanstown ladies restarted like they were possessed and fought like lions for every ball. Rachel O’Brien was moved to centre striker and she rocked Kilkerrin’s back line every time she got on the ball running at the defence. Lucy Kenny was as eager running at the defence and earned herself free after free which Katie Delaney delivered perfectly into the penalty box every time. There were tackles flying in from all sides and nothing was given away. Ashley Roberts when called upon advanced well to the edge of her box and to win everything and also made a great save with 10 mins to go. Katie Delaney with her trademark free kick from 25metres let fly into the penalty box and the ball flew into the bottom corner for an amazing strike. Colemanstown had their heads up and did all the attacking from then on but just came up against a well organised Kilkerrin defence. It’s off to Ballaghadreen on Monday evening for the next game in this RDFL pre- season tournament. Match report by Philip Dee.
