U14’s bail out in Connacht Shield Semi Final

Although, the Galway FA through it’s clubs agreed to cancel the rest of its local leagues from last season due to the COVID pandemic, Connacht competitions did proceed and last years U14s played the Connacht Shield Semi final away to Loughrea on Saturday. It was an uphill task for Colemanstown taking on a team who will compete in the U15 Premier league this season. Jason Finn reports on the game.

Loughrea started brightly and went 1 nil up early on through their left midfielder. The Colemanstown lads responded well and were denied a clear penalty shortly after when Jason Rabbitte was taken down as he tried to get on the end of a cross. Rabbitte then almost got on the end of a Tommy Mellody cross as his header went slightly wide. Loughrea then made it 2 on the stroke of half time when their right winger cut in from the flank and slotted past Cian Ruane.
Half Time: Loughrea 2-0 Colemanstown.

Colemanstown regrouped at half time and began the second half brightly. Loughrea then scored a third goal against the run of play. A couple of substitutions seemed to inspire Colemanstown and they pulled one back when Ciaran Keating got on the end of a David Walsh corner. As Colemasntown pushed forward, Loughrea killed off the game when they scored their fourth with 5 minutes remaining. Best for Colemanstown were Mitchell, Mellody, Keating and Rabbitte.

Full time: Loughrea 4-1 Colemanstown.

A disappointing result for Colemanstown’s youngsters but nevertheless, a game which should bring the group on further in their development. With the team moving up a league for the upcoming season, more competitive games will be coming their way.
