U16’s bow out of Cup with 5-1 defeat

Colemanstown U16’s found the going tough in their first round Cup game against MacDara away on Sunday. The game was scheduled for Colemanstown but was reversed to the Carraroe side’s astro pitch towards the weekend in a bid to get the match played. The hosts secured a safe passage through to the next round of the Cup with a convincing 5-1 win.  The first big chance of the game came within 5 minutes when Ryan Noone’s corner was met by a Niall McDonagh header but his effort found the keeper’s hands. Minutes later MacDara took over as the Colemanstown lads just struggled to get going. They found it hard to adapt to the full size astro surface with poor ball control and many passes and poor first touch going astray.  3-0 half time.

The 2nd half started well with much better passing until MacDara broke from the middle and scored to make it 4-0. Colemanstown then pulled one back with good work down the right wing by Jack Donoghue beating two players before he sent a low hard cross into the box which found Connor Booth who was in the right place at the opportune time to tap home. Colemnastown put up a good fight in the second half, but their display was not good enough to beat MacDara who scored late on to end a miserable 5-1 loss for the Colemanstown boys.

Overall it was a tough day but the lads tried hard and just found it difficult to acclimatise with the full size astro sod. A special mention to Declan Greaney who finished a 12 hour shift at 7am and made the long journey to Carraroe at 12.30pm; hopped off the bus and headed straight back into work again. There ain’t too many committed like that!
