Congratulations to all the locals in our wider community who completed the 40th Dublin City Marathon on a most beautiful sunny Sunday morning, 27th October 2019. Anita Murphy, Doonane, Carol Hynes, Colemanstown, Shane Keane, Mullaghmore, Pamela Mahony, Skehana, Ja Fahy, Colemanstown, Jarlath Scarry, Brierfield & Sarah Keane, Newbridge conquered one of the warmest Dublin City Marathon Race Day’s to cross the Finish Line in Merrion Square and pick up their hard-earned medals and souvenir finishers’ T-shirts.
After months of training with long runs and short runs, leisure runs and speed runs the runners set off on the 26.2-mile journey around Dublin City starting in Merrion Square at 9am, a date and time firmly etched in these runner’s minds for months in advance.
Sarah Keane, Newbridge was first of the gang to stride under the finish line gantry to complete her 3rd Dublin City Marathon in a row and seal a Personal Best for herself in 3:43. Having helped with academy girls training on Saturday morning, Anita Murphy bid goodbye to her hubby & kids and set off for Dublin as soon as academy training had finished. She strode under the Finish Line in her 3rd ever DCM under a clock of 3:55 just 3 seconds slower than her pace last year.
Carol Hynes completed her 13th marathon appearance in baking sun to a clock 4:05 after maintaining a splendid pace all through the 26.2 mile run. This marathon sealed her 10th DCM since she completed her first Dublin in 1988, the others being New York in 1991 when she created her marathon PB of 3:28; London (1994) & Connemara (2014). The young ones might be playing County football and camogie but their mum Carol is equally as impressive with such fine running. Pamela Mahony, Skehana completed her 4th consecutive DCM in 3:56. All participants are part of Abbey Running Club and trained together over the past number of months alongside Orla Quirke, Brierfield who completed the Galway Bay marathon on October 5th.
Ja Fahy Colemanstown, tore into his first ever marathon at a quick pace finishing in an emphatic time of 3:53. This time his wife Colleen was there to support him, given that the roles had been reversed for the previous three years. Shane Keane, Mullaghmore & Jarlath Scarry, Brierfield enjoyed the hype surrounding their first ever marathon appearance and completed the first half of the marathon in record pace and the gruelling run in 4 hours & 4½ hours respectively.
These runners have now cemented their status as kings and queens of the roads. And after all the energy sapping running and a few moans and groans, some of the group held their post mortem in the Ballsbridge Hotel and then sat in their cars and just drove home. There was a little pit-stop though for a well-earned Supermacs before they hit the West!
It was a beautiful day for marathon running. Indeed it was!.
