U13’s goal feast on opening weekend of School boys action

Our U13’s continued their unbeaten league form from last year and made it 12 unbeaten league games since competing in U12 competitive football in the 2018/19 season and possibly set a new club record in the process. Colemnastown started at a frenetic pace with plenty of opportunities in today’s 7-1 victory at Drom over Salthill Devon. They were like lightening off the blocks and hit the butt of the post twice within the first 8mins with young Shane Quirke & Josh Buckley coming close in quick succession after Cathal Hynes & Diarmuid Ryan respectively sent through the deliveries. Quirke drew another save on 9mins but the breakthrough was made a minute later when Quirke teed up the shot for Killian Hughes to find the opener.

Quirky showed great footwork in the danger area as he forced a great save but finished exquisitely from David Walsh’s delivery on 14mins. Killian Hughes provided the assist for No.3 on 16mins as his delivery into the box was half controlled by Josh Buckley but Quirke was on hand to make certain. Buckley was unlucky with a sublime effort as he controlled the ball with his head and his attempted lob of the keeper hit the post. Half chances fell to Jonah Donnellan & the towering Diarmuid Ryan from distance but Salthill Devon’s keeper was equal to the task. At this stage of the game Colemanstown were well on top with Shane Kenny, Diarmuid Ryan, Conor Walsh & Ross Lally failing to panic with some quick passing movement as they cleared many Salthill threats on goal.

Jonah Donnellan added a 4th just before the break albeit in fortunate fashion, when his effort from 30yards went under the keeper’s legs after Ross Lally, Killian Hughes & Davy Walsh were involved in the build-up. Donnellan’s long ball over the top found Davy Walsh on the left flank but his left footed cracker again drew another mighty save. 4-0: half time.

5mins after the restart Salthill’s free kick evaded Colemanstown’s defenders and Fionn Flattery to find the net. This failed to dent Colemanstown’s challenge as they pushed on with Cathal Kennedy at right back & Dylan Murphy pulling the strings at right wing. Quirke & Donnellan linked up nicely for Davy Walsh’s clinical left footed finish with precision to extend Colemanstown’s lead to 5-1. Fionn Flattery was called into action for the first time and made a smashing save. Straight down the other end, Colemanstown’s relentless pressure saw Dylan Murphy get a boot to Donnellan’s cross but his effort was saved on the line. Colemanstown had further half chances as they maintained their composure while Cian Burke & Sean Connolly added to the momentum. Killy Hughes scored the 6th after Salthill’s custodian got his hand to the ball but the force of the shot carried it over the line with 4 mins left. Dylan Murphy got a boot to Ross Lally’s cross but the ball went marginally wide. Right on the stroke of full time Quirky found Killy who finished with precision from close range to add a 7th and claim his hat-trick on the opening weekend of underage soccer.

It was a good first day back for these boys and even though Jayo was gone sunning himself; Gary Lally fresh and buzzing after topping the polls in the quiz the night before, kept the orders shouted out with a mighty positive attitude and set the tone for the team from the start. Well done lads, good first outing.
