Still recovering after an impressive and battling performance last Saturday in Letterfrack our A-Team were back in action on Tuesday evening against Mervue B in Fahys Field looking for another 3 points. The lads knew that it would be a tough and physical match but in typical Colemanstown fashion they were full of action and gave it everything until the final whistle.
Colemanstown’s first real chance came after only 2 mins when a dangerous free kick from Alan Finn was saved by the keeper and rebounded to Dylan Grady on the edge of the box who hit a thunderous shot only to be denied again by the Mervue keeper. After 5 mins a Mervue free on the edge of the box brought an excellent save from Kevin Sayers but the Colemanstown defence failed to deal with the rebound and it was bundled to the net to give Mervue the lead.
Mervue had a strong wind at their backs in the first half and on numerous occasions sent long deliveries over the heads of the Colemanstown defenders only to find the safe hands of keeper Kevin Sayers. Colemanstown’s defenders were under pressure for the first 30 mins but with the rock solid pairing of Jason Finn and Alan Finn in the centre they steadied the ship until Mervue were awarded a penalty on 38mins. The management on the line were not concerned at this stage because they knew Kevin loves nothing more than saving penalties and yet again delivered the goods and not only that, he then decided that he might as well save the rebound as well.
Colemanstown created problems for Mervue down the wings with the talented duo of Geordan Kenny and Dylan Grady being a constant thorn in their side while Mossy Carr and James Barclay held their own in the middle of the field. On 40mins a certain goal for Mervue was halted after the ever reliable Padraig Quirke put his body on the line with a vital block while after a couple of minutes of treatment he was up on his feet ready to resume the action.
Mervue seemed to have more possession at this stage and wanted a second goal before halftime which they deservedly got after one of their strikers found himself on the edge of the box and chipped the ball over the onrushing keeper. A nice 2-0 cushion for Mervue at half time. The hosts started the second half well by attempting a couple of long range efforts and it only took them a couple of minutes to get their third goal.
However, the Colemanstown lads never threw in the towel even though they were up against the ropes a few times. At this stage Sean Walsh was introduced as an experienced head. Ronan Carr on the left and Niall Cunningham and David Mullins on the right created plenty of chances and were often taken down by the Mervue defenders. Every free kick into the Mervue box from Alan Finn was outstanding, somehow it just never fell right for the Colemanstown lads; there was always a Mervue jersey in the way. There will be days like that. …..
With 2 minutes left the Mervue attack took advantage of a defensive error and finished the game with a fourth goal. Yet again this fine group of players did not stop until the final whistle. In truth, they didn’t really get the breaks but will have to take out their frustration in their next game against Tuam Celtic next Saturday. It’s a long season and there’s no doubting, there will be better days ahead. Final score: Mervue 4; Colemanstown 0
