O35s: Colemanstown & Glen Celtic battle to stalemate

Although the game finished scoreless, this was far from a meaningless game as both teams went at it hammer and tongs in Colemanstown on Wednesday evening with a high standard of football evident. There was nothing to choose between the sides as the fast pace of the game dictated the early passages of play.  Glen came close from a corner kick, but with Kevin Sayers in splendid goal keeping mood, his last ditch save stopped an almost certain goal. Colemanstown were giving as good as they got with Eoghan Barrett & Andy Concannon in top form until Concannon had to retire early due to an ankle injury while like it or not, Gary Broderick, but Niall Rohan was a significant loss!!

Mid way through the half, Colemanstown were creative as they mustered up a few chances. Ger Grady turned the Glen Celtic defence inside out but his shot went narrowly wide. Colin O’Grady also had a great chance but failed to convert. Barry Forde used his bench to good effect given the warm clammy evening, and it also helped to give the midges the runaround or else players would have been simply eaten alive. Even poor Anne Forde & Orla McCaffrey and all other spectators had to wrap themselves in cotton wool to halt the scourge of the midges.

The warm evening resulted in a few changes as the 2nd half began. Garry O’Grady had a good close range chance but failed to pull the trigger at the opportune time while brother Colin also had a half chance, which he would have converted a few years ago…. Sorry Colin… Ger Grady created another chance for himself but also failed to find the target.

Overall both defences excelled as Glen Celtic made it difficult to penetrate their rearguard while Peter Kelly, Gary Broderick, Ross Sullivan & Eoghan Barrett were well on top at the back for the Colemanstown lads and Andy Concannon did a lot of donkey work in the middle third until he retired injured. 0-0 result was probably the fairest in the end as no one deserved to lose this one.

This is a very competitive league with no easy games. It was great to see both teams give 100% right to the death which is a tribute to both teams. The game versus Skyvalley Rovers scheduled for this Saturday is called off due to the sad passing of one of Glen Celtic’s players. We sympathise with his family and team mates. May he rest in peace.
