‘A’ Team & Youth team: Midweek & Weekend Match Reports

With only one game left in the league to date and a spate of recent poor results, Colemanstown ‘A’ took on Corrib Rangers on Thursday last in Westside and defended well for the first 15 mins. Colemanstown conceded their 1st goal on 20mins with a finish at the back post from the Corrib Rangers winger. They scored from a corner shortly after when their centre back scored. Colemanstown conceded a 3rd goal just before half time due to a dubious offside decision that went against them making an uphill battle for the boys in green in the 2nd half. 3-0 at half time.

A couple of substitutions at half time revived things. Colemanstown were creative and made a couple of chances but their keeper pulled off a string of good saves. Colemanstown pulled one back through a header from Damien Wynne; Squelchy providing the assist. Colemanstown had another chance to claw another back but the goal was ruled out for offside. Corrib Rangers scored with 10 mins to go through a header from one of their substitutions to put the game well beyond Colemanstown’s reach. Colemanstown hotly contested the 2nd half with a good performance but in fairness had left themselves a mountain to climb. Full time: Colemanstown 1; Corrib Rangers 4

Team: John Gormally, Jack Kennedy, Jason Finn, Tommy McDonagh, Conal Docherty, Geordan Kenny, Alan Finn, Gareth Lally, Padraig Quirke, Tomas Carr, Stephen Walsh. Subs Used: Ray Moran, Damien Wynne & Ronan Geraghty.

On Saturday, Colemanstown took on Renmore away in their 2nd last game of the league. The hosts scored two quick fire goals at the start, one through a corner kick when their centre back rose highest to score a powerful header. A misplaced pass by one of our midfielders put their striker through who was then taken down for a penalty which he duly converted. Colemanstown got one back before the break when Padraig Quirke nodded home an Alan Finn corner. 2-1 at half time.

Renmore scored again shortly after the restart from a very controversial offside goal. Colemanstown started to move the ball a bit more and were awarded a penalty for a handball halfway through the second half. Jason Finn converted the spot kick. Colemanstown then equalized with 10 mins to go through a Sean Walsh header which was no more than they deserved. However, like so many times this season, they conceded with 3 mins to go from a finish from outside the box from their winger. Leaving the 4 sucker punches aside that cost Colemanstown the goals, they strung together a fine performance and showed great fighting spirit even though they paid the price in the end for sleep walking into trouble. Full time: Colemanstown 3; Renmore 4

Team: John Gormally, Ronan Carr, Jason Finn, Ronan Geraghty, Alan Finn, Ray Moran, Damien Wynne, Padraig Quirke, Tomas Carr, Gareth Lally, John O’Brien. Subs used: Sean Walsh, Jarlath Healy & Shane Lally.

‘A’ team have only 1 game left to play against West Utd in South Park on Saturday next at 2pm. I’m sure they’ll be glad to see the back of this season but they will re-build and be ready for next season. For their part, they have done just about enough to stay in Div 1 football next season.

Our under-strength youth team took on Oughterard in the semi final of the Divisional Cup at home on Sunday. This was always going to be a big ask as Oughterard had topped the league table above them. They were hit 3 times and only managed a goal back which came from the boot of Mike Mulligan although it may have taken a deflection off James Barclay on route.  Final score: Colemanstown 1; Oughterard 3
