Rampant U12’s & U13’s keep league title race alive

Colemanstown U13’s kept their league title race wide open by inflicting another defeat of the season on Renmore with an engrossing 6-0 victory in Renmore yesterday. The league title race is now down to the wire in the last game of the season against unbeaten Cregmore. The 2 Cillys, Cillian Fahey and Killian Hughes proved the scourge of Renmore with Hughes claiming a hatrick and Fahey’s brace added to by a Ross Lally special was enough to see a comfortable win for the boys in green.

Eanna Burke tested the keeper on 4mins with a good effort which saw the keeper stretch well to keep the ball out while Harry Mitchell’s snap shot wasn’t too far away from the left post. The deadlock was broken on 14mins when Fahey intercepted a short kickout, weaved his way towards the corner before his inch perfect cross found Killy Hughes whose bicycle kick found the bottom right corner; the smile on his face as he ran back to the half way line for tip off told its own story. Renmore’s first real chance came on 16mins following a defensive slip up and as Cian Ruane committed himself, he was tumbled in the process and only for the vital interception of Luke Williams who whipped the ball off the goal line, the equaliser looked ominous. Afterwards, even his own keeper came out to applaud him. Johnny Keane’s right footed shot wasn’t too far off the mark after a great passage of play involving David Walsh at the back and Cilly Fahey. Williams rose highest to meet David Walsh’s corner on 25mins but his effort also went wide as Colemanstown upped the tempo. Hughes & Harry Mitchell linked up nicely to find Cilly Fahey whose attempted lob of the keeper failed to work out. Half time: Colemanstown 1; Renmore 0.

6mins after the restart Hughes scored his 2nd when David Walsh’s cross from the left bounced nicely for Killy Hughes and he headed home his 2nd of the day. The keeper made another fine save, this time from Fahey as he latched onto a long kick out from Cian Ruane, skipped away from the defence and as he went to lash his effort, the ball was smuggled off his toe by the keeper who had advanced to drown out his effort. Fahey was rewarded for his hard work soon afterwards when he pounced on a scuffed kick out by the keeper and sneaked in to finish to the net for a more than well-deserved goal. Fahey added his 2nd with 12 mins to go after Jonah Donnellan’s diagonal cross found the great pace of Cilly whose low hard drill was sublime. Renmore had a great chance as they broke on the counter but some superb defensive play ensured the goal was kept intact. As the buoyant greens were commanding play, Killy Hughes added his 3rd of the day when he capitalised on a poor clearance and dispatched it nicely past the keeper. Right on the stroke of 30mins Ross Lally scored a whopper from the edge of the box after Cilly Fahey played Eoin Keague and as the ball deflected off a Renmore defender, it fell nicely for Ross to score his first goal of the season for the U13’s. In the last play of the game, Larry Murrajvos, Eoin Keague, Cilly Fahey & Ross Lally all lined up to take a shot but Renmore’s brave keeper was adamant not to let another pass him.

Colemanstown were simply not willing to relinquish their title race without a fight, which they made certain on the day and so this leaves the League title race delicately poised for the highly anticipated clash between both table toppers, Cregmore & Colemanstown, both unbeaten in the league to date – a game I’m sure will not disappoint which is currently fixed for April 6th.

Our U12s were not too quick to fly out of the traps against city side East Utd in Colemanstown this morning therefore setting the tone for a pulsating game. East Utd had the first chance as Fionn Flattery was beaten in goals but the ball was scooped off the line by the stretched leg of Jonah Donnellan. They came close again from a free kick after Donnellan, this time fouled his man. Colemanstown looked set for a tough day in the Colemanstown spring sunshine as East Utd snapped into tackles and pegged back their hosts. In the ensuing play, however, the better chances fell to Colemanstown. Cathal Hynes put Killy Hughes through but the keeper was quick to advance off his line and save with his feet while Davy Walsh drew a great save at the butt of the post but as the keeper spilled the ball he miraculously recovered to regain his composure and save on the 2nd attempt. Dylan Murphy’s attempt on 17mins was halted by the goalie’s outstretched body as Cathal Kennedy did the hard work in the build up. Murphy’s head wasn’t too far off meeting a floating cross from Killian Hughes. Murphy was rewarded for his hard work as he got on the end of a long delivery from midfield and his cool finish left the keeper with no chance for his 10th goal of the season. Killy Hughes was unlucky as he scooped his effort over the bar from the edge of the box & then Dylan Murphy again drew a one handed save from the keeper to leave the score at half time: Colemanstown 1; East Utd 0.

The 2nd half was only a minute old when David Walsh’s cross was flicked on by Jonah Donnellan and Killy Hughes was on hand to volley to the net at the back post to complete a productive 2 days of football for him with 4 goals over the 2 days. David Walsh saw two further efforts of his saved. 13mins into the 2nd half, Fionn Flattery was called into action as East Utd broke on the counter but Flattery was equal to the task. The East keeper then had to make a good diving save to deny Hughes his 5th of the weekend. With 3mins left Dylan Murphy rose highest to connect to Davy Walsh’s left footed corner and his powerful header was hardly seen as it rattled the net. Late in the game, Fionn Flattery prevailed as he made another superb one-on-one save to ensure his 7th clean sheet this season to leave the boys in green rejoicing with 3 games left to play. Next up is Barna / Furbo away in the league on Saturday next.
