U13s continue winning form

Our U-13s triumphed 5-1 en route to their sixth straight league win as they continued their hot form in Athenry yesterday morning with another superb performance against Athenry. Although the score may suggest otherwise, this was far from a stroll in the park. The go-ahead goal came in the 6th minute when Harry Mitchell from left back fed Jayo Rabbitte on the wing whose cross found Tommy Mellody who drew first blood on his first time of asking. The only other first half chance fell to Jason Rabbitte who wasn’t too far off the mark with an effort from distance. 1-0 at half time.

Moments after the restart Jonah Donnellan had a low hard drill but failed to test the keeper. David Walsh found the side net with his left footed effort after he capitalised on a poor Athenry kick out. 4mins into the 2nd half the two C/Killys turned provider, Cillian Fahey & Killian Hughes as they combined well to find Rabbitte who lashed home into the top corner. Killian Hughes drew a double save from the Athenry custodian as he shot on the turn before Cilly Fahey made it 3-0 with a mighty effort from a good distance out after a wonderfully worked team goal. Midway through the 2nd half, Harry Mitchell quenched his thirst for goals, this time starting in the left back position, he ran up the flank and let fly from the edge of the 18’ box for a real screamer with a deft calm finish, a goal well worth the wait.

Athenry got a goal back 17mins into the 2nd half with a well worked goal which went under the diving body of Cian Ruane but Colemanstown failed to panic. They maintained their composure and continued plugging away. Tommy Mellody was unlucky not the claim a 2nd as his effort went right across the face of the goal. 5mins before full time Jayo Rabbitte notched his brace as Jonah Donnellan skipped down the line and crossed to Rabbitte who took one touch before unleashing a thundering unstoppable shot to the net. This definitely put Colemnastown in cruise control for the final 5 minutes as the boys in green held out relatively comfortably. With the last kick of the game, Eoin Keague had the chance of making it 6 as he latched onto a through ball from Rabbitte but in the end was beaten by a defender who came out of nowhere to clear the danger.

This was a stifling defensive performance by Eanna Burke, Luke Williams, Ciárán Keating, Harry Mitchell who has found himself a new role at left back & Dara Scarry (2nd half). The back line were well organised and never showed signs of panic. Not to mention the workrate of Tommy Mellody, Cillian Fahey, David Walsh, Cian Burke, Johnny Keane & Larry Murrajvos at midfield. Up front Cillian Hughes, Jonah Donnellan, Jayo Rabbitte & Eoin Keague created a real buzz when on the ball while Cian Ruane made a handful of clutch saves between the posts.

There was a great atmosphere created by the supporters, an entertaining game with some showcased football, a winning feeling which didn’t die down, plenty of goals, Harry back in scoring form, 3 points to bring back to Colemanstown, what more could you want but more they gave as many of these lads headed to Dunnes Stores bag packing as a club fundraiser. So well done lads and mentors Jason Finn & Gareth Lally.
