On a lovely afternoon,Colemanstown’s u15’s booked their place in Terryland Park for the Divisional Cup Final with a nerve-jangling victory over city guns Mervue. Mervue probably were the better team in the 1st half; our best chance falling to Paul Lally but his effort went agonisingly wide. They went 1-nil down at the end of the 1st half when our rearguard failed to clear from a corner as the ball bobbled in the 6yard box for Mervue to tap in. Whatever Bobby said at half time it sparked his team into action as they emerged a revitalised team in the 2nd half. They fired the ball around nicely playing the wings to great effect and were rewarded when Lee Murphy’s quick thinking over a free kick laid the ball to the better placed Keith Connell who rifled the net from distance. Numerous chances came our way for the next half hour most notably from Paul Lally, Keith Murphy, Lee Murphy & Aidan Monaghan but Mervue’s keeper was in top form. Keith Connell & Lee Murphy dominated proceedings in midfield and with extra time looming we just couldnt find a winner. Colemanstown maintained their concentration in extra time while the backs stood firm soaking up much pressure. Midway through the 1st period of extra time Ronan Carr passed a through ball to Lee Murphy who controlled the ball beautifully on his chest and he lashed an unstoppable drive from 40yards to great applause and much delight from the Colemanstown stand. The 2nd period of extra time saw Mervue push on for the equaliser but our defence stood firm and with their confidence at an all time high they soaked up the pressure and held out admiringly; their never say die attitude blaringly obvious right to the end of the contest. Feelings may have fired a little as the final whistle sounded in what was an emotional day for players, supporters & management alike. Many of these youngsters had little reprieve as they played the Final of the Suck Valley Hurling league later that same evening following 2 hours of football. But for now at least they have their eyes firmly on Terryland Park as Bobby Masterson continues to produce sides that should never be written off.
